One in four children in Slovakia is overweight or obese. Seven years ago, it was one in six teenagers – today we’re facing an epidemic threatening an entire generation. The European Union warns us: rising childhood obesity is one of the biggest health threats facing Slovaks.

Why Should We Care?

“Did you know that our lifestyle accounts for 40% of our cancer risk? And that half of that comes from what we eat and how we prepare it?”

Childhood obesity isn’t just about appearance. It’s linked to lifelong health complications – from cardiovascular disease and breathing difficulties to psychological problems and infertility. The cause? A combination of unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, and hours spent in front of screens. The habits children form today stay with them for life.

Slovakia spends just 1% of its healthcare budget on prevention – one third of the European average. We’re constantly putting out fires instead of preventing them.

Six Steps Toward Change

Solutions exist, and some are already being tested. In school canteens across the Banská Bystrica region, an AI-powered robot analyzes what children enjoy eating and what ends up in the bin. This data helps adjust recipes to be both healthy and popular. At the same time, we need to educate parents, regulate advertising of unhealthy foods, and increase physical education hours.

An Investment in the Future

Tens of thousands of euros will flow into Slovakia from the Recovery Plan and EU funds. Is there a better investment than our children’s health? We need a systemic approach – from biobanks to verify the effectiveness of measures to regulating harmful substances in our environment. Change is possible if we act now.
